Chenin Blanc – 2017
Dashe Cellars – Les Enfants Terribles Concrete Cuvée Clarksburg – Clarksburg, California
Why drink this: Clarksburg is a tiny, overlooked maritime wine growing town that grows predominantly beautiful Chenin Blanc and brawny Petit Sirah. Why haven’t you heard of it? Clarksburg mainly sells its grapes to winemakers in Napa Valley where the Chenin is prized for its taught and crisp, yet chewy apricot-like fruit and is used like a spice to tighten up big Chardonnays and add depth to Sauvignon Blancs. This is a rare glimpse into what Clarksburg Chenin does on its own.
Cabernet Franc – 2017
Bernard Baudry – Chinon, Loire, France
Why drink this: The Baudry’s are staunch traditionalists when it comes to making their wine. Fermented in cement and aged in large old wood vats, this is a black currant, licorice-like and gamey glimpse into the Chinon wines of yesteryear.
