Popular Coffee Shop Now Transitions to Wine Bar 3 Nights A Week! - Stamford Moms

I’m so excited that one of my favorite Stamford coffee spots is now also a wine bar! Turning Point Coffee and Wine Bar transitions to a wine bar on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings!

Since the coffee shop opened a year ago in the Bulls Head Shopping Center, it’s become a destination for coffee (brewed in-house) with breakfast and lunch menus, as well as delicious pastries (the chocolate chip cookies are my favorite… especially when they’re just out of the oven). During wine bar hours, there are now 25 wines by the glass, 10 craft beers, a small plate menu and kombucha on tap as well as espresso drinks. Seats have also been added with a communal table and another counter so you can come on a date, or with a group. After baby arrives in November, I plan to spend some fun date nights and girls’ nights out there!
Turning Point offers wines that are authentically connected to the people and places they’re made from. Owner, Chris Hallowell explains, “Our goal is to have the vast majority of the wines be made from biodynamically or organically-farmed grapes (with a few extremely special outliers) from small wineries and farms. Outside of that, we’re going to have a pretty wide selection; there will be the familiar, such as a Napa Cabernet from Freemark Abbey (one of Napa’s most historic wineries and first in Napa to have a female winemaker), then there will be super esoteric wines such as a Portuguese sparkling rosé made from Baga and Bical grapes, wines with no added sulfites and everything in between.” He continues, “We want our wine bar to be a place you can come to discover, so we’ll be offering taste sizes (as well as full glasses) and the selection will be constantly rotating, so you can try something new every time you come in.”

This new venture is particularly close to Chris and his wife, Nicole’s hearts since both have experience working in the wine industry. “Earlier in my career, I ran the international tastings department for Wine & Spirits Magazine, where I managed the assessment of about 13,000 wines per year,” explains Chris. “Before Turning Point, I worked for various wine companies that represented small wineries from around the world. My interests evolved and I became fascinated with coffee in a similar way to wine, hence the birth of Turning Point Coffee Roasters.” Nicole has also been in the wine industry almost all of her career and currently manages a large wine program in the retail sector.

“Adding the wine bar was always part of our vision for Turning Point. We wanted a place we could go locally to try several organic and biodynamically-farmed wines in Stamford for our date nights. So it was always part of the plan, but we wanted to nail the coffee first, and now after a year, we feel we’re ready to take on wine and give it the same attention to detail,” says Chris.

Turning Point “officially” transitions from coffee bar to wine bar at 5 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, staying open until 10 p.m. on Thursday, and 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. But, if someone wants a glass of wine or a beer with lunch, or a mimosa on Sunday, they’re happy to oblige!
