Volunteer Opportunities with the Stamford Public Education Foundation | Stamford Moms
The Stamford Public Education Foundation (SPEF) has a mission to deliver educational programs and resources that elevate student, educator and parent success by bridging the gap between needs in the Stamford Public Schools and resources in our community.

SPEF has been serving the Stamford community since 1996. It offers programs and resources for all students in the Stamford Public School district, with an emphasis on serving children at the low end of the achievement gap. Its vision is that one day every student in Stamford Public Schools will graduate high school prepared and inspired to be a productive member of society.

The organization depends on volunteers from the community to deliver programming to Stamford Public School students in the areas of college and career readiness, family engagement, enrichment, and kindergarten readiness. So, if becoming more involved in the community or finding ways to give back are on your list of New Year’s resolutions, SPEF could be a perfect way for you to get involved. We have a list of volunteer opportunities with SPEF, below!

Traditional Mentoring

Open to adults (age 18+) to serve as mentors to middle school students for 40 minutes a week during school hours. Multiple time slots are available, and no experience is required. A SPEF Program Coordinator is on-site to support you and your mentee and guide you through structured activities focused on goal-setting; improving academic standing; engaging in positive after-school activities; and, preparing for life after high school.

Leadership Mentoring

Open to adults (age 21+) to serve as mentors to high school students. Mentors meet with mentee’s 2-4 times per month based on their own schedules and shared interests. Mentors and mentees check-in with a dedicated SPEF Program Coordinator for guidance and support. Reliable transportation is required.

This is where SPEF’s greatest need is for volunteers. Currently there are more than 50 middle and high school students waiting for a caring mentor.

Student-Athlete Tutoring

Open to adult volunteers (age 21+) to serve as tutors to high school Student-Athletes for 2-4 one-hour sessions per month. High need subjects: math and writing. After-school tutoring sessions take place at Stamford High School (1 p.m. – 4 p.m.) and Westhill High School (2 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.). Volunteers select the dates and times that work best for their schedule. A SPEF Program Coordinator is on-site to support volunteer tutors and supervise students.
