Kindergarten Registration

Anyone who needs assistance with registration is encouraged to attend the Kindergarten Registration Event at the SPS Welcome Center on Saturday, March 14, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. In-person support will be available in English, Spanish, and Haitian-Creole.
If your child turns 5 years old ON OR BEFORE September 1, 2026: Your child is eligible to attend kindergarten in 2026-27.

Early Kindergarten Admission Assessments
State law now requires children to be 5 years old on or before September 1 of the year they begin kindergarten.
If your child turns 5 years old between September 2, 2026 and December 31, 2026: Your child does not meet the age requirements to attend kindergarten in 2026-27. Please make plans for your child to attend preschool.
Kindergarten staffing for 2026-27 is based on projected enrollment of students born between September 2, 2020 and September 1, 2021. Early admission to kindergarten for students who turn 5 years old on or after September 2, 2026 may be offered on a limited basis provided (1) there is space in the child’s assigned school and (2) the child successfully completes a kindergarten readiness assessment conducted by Stamford Public Schools.
Please consider the following when deciding whether to request early kindergarten admission:
- 36 states now require children to be 5 years old on or before September 1 of the year they begin kindergarten.
- This age requirement is supported by teachers and school administrators because it ensures more students are developmentally ready for kindergarten.
- Children admitted via early K admission for 2025-26 may be 12+ months younger than other children in their classroom.
- Historically, only 1-2 students per year have been granted early admission to kindergarten. (More students were granted early admission for the 2024-25 school year due to the timing of the change in state law.)
