Stamford will show off its pride by illuminating Stamford’s Old Town Hall at 175 Atlantic Street in rainbow colors, to celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride Month. Old Town Hall will display the rainbow colors every night starting June 1 at 9 p.m. and continue for the rest of the month.
“One of the many reasons Stamford is great is because we embrace our diversity and ensure everyone can call our community home,” said Mayor David Martin. “We’re happy to publicly celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride Month this year thanks to this effort led by Stamford Pride and supported by Old Town Hall Redevelopment Agency.”
The lighting project was organized by Stamford Pride, a group of local LGBTQ+ residents and community leaders. “We want to show Stamford as the warm and accepting community it is and this project accomplishes that goal in a very visible way,” said President of Stamford Pride John Varamo. “We hope the lighting of Old Town Hall will be the first of many pride celebrations in Stamford.”
The colored light filters were donated by Stamford-based Rosco Laboratories, the global leader in creative lighting solutions. “Thanks to Rosco’s generosity, we are able to illuminate one of the Stamford’s most iconic landmarks in vivid rainbow colors,” said Varamo.
The rainbow pride flag will be ceremoniously raised at Stamford Government Center by Mayor Martin and members of Stamford Pride on June 1 at noon.
Pride Month is celebrated in June to commemorate the anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion in New York City on June 28, 1969, which is considered the birth of the modern LGBTQ+ movement. Stamford Pride was in the midst of planning Stamford’s inaugural Pride Week when the COVID-19 health crisis hit. The group looks forward to June 2021, when they plan to bring a week of inclusive and family-friendly pride events to Stamford in a safe environment.
