Letter from Superintendent Dr. Tamu Lucero
Dear SPS Student Athletes and Families,
As always, the health and safety of our students and staff remains at the forefront of every decision the Stamford Public Schools (SPS) makes. After consulting with our Stamford Department of Health (DOH) regarding the risks associated with permitting fans/spectators to attend our fall athletic contests, as well as a review of the current position of the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) SPS has made the very difficult decision not to allow fans/spectators at athletic events or competitions hosted by our schools.
As a school district, our priority is to provide education to our students, including continuing to offer in-person learning options, despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, we recognize the importance of participating in athletics for many students. As such, we continue to work closely with the Stamford DOH to establish and implement protocols that allow our student athletes to continue to participate in fall sports as long as it is safe to do so, while minimizing the risk of infection to others. This decision on fan/spectator attendance is consistent with that goal and with our ongoing practice of following guidance from the CIAC, Connecticut Department of Health, and the Stamford DOH.
While we recognize that some of our surrounding school districts have decided to allow fans/spectators, others have not. Please be certain to check the policy of each school district prior to attending any games hosted on their campuses. In the coming weeks we will be meeting with our Athletic Directors and coaches to discuss options for recognizing our senior athletes in their final year.
Thank you for your support and understanding. Together, we will get through these challenging times.
