Message from Stamford Public School Superintendent | Stamford Moms

Dear SPS Staff and Families,

I hope this communication continues to find you, your family, and your friends healthy and safe.   The reality of how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected all of us to varying degrees has become evident and I want you to know that I am thinking of all of you during this very difficult time.  I would like to take a moment to acknowledge the loss of one of our Board of Education members, Mr. Jack Bryant.  Although Mr. Bryant only served on the Board of Education for a relatively short period, the love, support, and community leadership that he provided to Stamford Public Schools (SPS) and the City of Stamford is beyond measure.

As we enter into Phase II of Distance Teaching and Learning, we recognize we are also reaching the projected peak of the COVID-19 health crisis in Stamford and Fairfield County.  Therefore, we understand that teachers, staff, students, and families’ level of engagement may be impacted. We must also acknowledge that while each school had its own approach to our transition to Distance Teaching and Learning each approach is worthy of praise.  We believe that the Phase II goal of providing additional support and guidance will allow for building leaders, in collaboration with their staff and understanding the priorities of their families, to create a Distance Teaching and Learning plan to continue to meet the needs of their school community.

While our district has demonstrated herculean efforts to introduce Distance Teaching and Learning across 21 schools and several programs, provide chrome books and other technology, offer Grab-and-Go meals, and purchase and distribute hot spots, we still fall short of engaging all students.  As a result, we are excited to share that SPS is collaborating with our community partners to develop a community-wide plan for student engagement and family support.  Our Teaching and Learning, Family and Community Engagement, and Intervention and Student Support Departments are working together to provide professional development and workshops not only for our teachers and staff, but also for our families who need additional support.

I will end by saying that no one can honestly question whether, as a school community, we have demonstrated the will and effort to continue to offer educational opportunities and social emotional support for our students or that we are committed to improving as we continue down the road of Distance Teaching and Learning in our district.  For this collaborative effort, I thank everyone for their continued patience, understanding and support.

Stay Healthy and Well,

Dr. Tamu Lucero
Superintendent
