Meet Monica! | Stamford Moms

How many kids do you each have and what are their ages?
My daughter is 17 and I have three step children ages 22, 28, 30 (clearly not “kids” anymore!)

What are your favorite family activities in Stamford?
We love going downtown and eating food from all different parts of the world, and capping it off with delicious Boba on Bank Street.

What do you like about living in the area?
I love so many things about Stamford – the beaches, the restaurants, and when my kids were younger the Stamford Nature Center. We are so close to New York City and short drives to skiing and amusement parks.

Tell us about your business.
5 Squares is a customizable healthful home food delivery business that provides fresh daily deliveries to your door.

What is the inspiration behind your business?
Ever think to yourself, “Wow, I wish I could just have someone cook for me,” well that in essence, was my inspiration: 22 years ago I was struggling with some extra pounds and started prepping my own portion-controlled meals. It would take me an entire day to prepare for the upcoming week. It dawned on me that if I needed the help – others did too!

What are your favorite meals to cook?
I have my go-to’s at home – I make a mean pot of Cuban black beans, I love stuffing a chicken with fresh herbs and citrus; roasting it to perfection. As you can imagine, most of meals are delivered fresh from 5 Squares though.

How do you get your kids involved in cooking?
My 17 year old is vegetarian and loves fresh veggie stir-frys – going to the market with her is always a great way to make sure she loves what’s on the menu for dinner.

What is your #1 tip to busy moms who can’t seem to fit in meal planning?
Aside from ordering meals from me… Plan, plan, plan ahead.

How do you balance work and mommyhood?
This has always been a juggling act for me. Aside from running my company, I have been (am) extremely active in my daughter’s school. There is no secret sauce – do what I can, get done what I can, and make time for me time because a happy mommy is a good mommy.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve gotten from another mom?
Don’t compare yourself to others: Every child is different, and every family is unique.
