Molly Miller is a new Mom, and a lawyer at Schoonmaker George, says one of her proudest moments was becoming a Partner at the firm while 8 months pregnant!

Molly shares what is most rewarding and most challenging about working at a family/matrimonial law firm and how she balances her impressive career with being a new Mom. And she also answers some tough questions about when it’s time to speak to a lawyer!

Can you please tell us a bit about yourself personally?

I am a new mom for the first time. My husband and I had our first baby, Kevin Robert, in January 2024. We live in Stamford!

Where do you live in Stamford and what do you love about Stamford and your neighborhood?

We live in the Harbor Point area of Stamford. We’ve been in Stamford for over 7 years. We love that Harbor Point has so many great restaurants, awesome events, and space to take lots of walks. We decided to move to Harbor Point because of the community and good location – close to work and the train station.

Can you please share about your individual professional backgrounds and career highlights?

I graduated from law school in 2013 and have been practicing family law exclusively since that time. I joined Schoonmaker George in March 2017 and immediately knew it was the right place for me. I like to say that it was “fate” that brought me to such a great firm with such wonderful people.  My biggest career highlight so far was becoming a partner at the firm when I was eight months pregnant in December, 2023.

What do you find the most challenging and most rewarding part of working for a family/matrimonial law firm?

We help people through one of the most difficult times in their life; which is both incredibly rewarding and challenging for us as lawyers. Each case presents unique obstacles and different issues, but that allows us to stay sharp in many other fields or areas of the law – whether it be tax, trust and estates, psychology, or child development, as examples.  The best part of this work is helping our clients find happiness in the next chapter of their lives.  It is both personally and professionally satisfying to watch the transformation of our clients and to help them find peace.

What makes Schoonmaker George unique to other family/matrimonial law offices?

Schoonmaker George is a family in every sense of the word. We all truly enjoy working with each other and I know I can trust and rely on every lawyer and staff member at SG. When a client hires a lawyer at our firm, they benefit not only from the exceptional intelligence and skills of that individual lawyer but also from the collective experience and support of our entire team.

Sensitive question, but I know many of us would like to know, at what point of considering divorce should you be contacting a lawyer?

Understanding the process and knowing your rights are crucial when it comes to divorce. If you’re considering a divorce, it’s never too early to consult with a lawyer to educate yourself, even if you’re not yet ready to take legal action. At Schoonmaker George, our initial consultation is invaluable, regardless of where you are in your marriage.

How does being a Mom help you in your job and understanding your cases?

Being a mom has given me a deeper appreciation and understanding of situations from a client’s perspective as a parent.  It has also helped me to be better tuned in to baby/child development and how important that is when it comes to crafting parenting plans.  Overall, being a mom has helped me to relate more to our clients who are also parents and to offer a new individualized approach based on my own personal experiences.

How do you find a balance with motherhood and your job? Any tips for the rest of the Moms out there?

As a new mom, I’m still working on finding the right balance and would love any tips from other moms! For now, I’m focusing on being fully present wherever I am—whether at work or at home—giving 100% of my attention to my family, clients, and colleagues in each moment.
