Meet Julia! | Stamford Moms

How many kids do you each have and what are their ages?
I have 2 boys, 6 and almost 3 years old.

What are your favorite family activities in Stamford?
We love to go to playgrounds and the Stamford Museum and Nature Center has the best one for my kids. They are little climbers and animal lovers so that’s the perfect place for my family. We also like to have brunch at Table 104, they have our favorite meatball and a great outdoor seating area.

What do you like about living in Stamford?
After living in big cities for more than 25 years, I feel that I found my place here. Stamford has the best of suburban life with so many parks and nature but also has a city life with good restaurants and services. I also love how receptive people are here, we made such good friends in the last few years.

Tell us about your business, Brigadeiro by Julia.
I am from Brazil and brigadeiros are the most famous (and favorite) treat from my country. They are popular for kids parties, social events, weddings or just as a treat to eat after a hard day! The original one is the chocolate with chocolate sprinkles, you can find it in my menu and seven other flavors (but if you have another idea, let me know and I will be happy to make it). You can treat yourself with a small gift box or order a large quantity for a party.

I studied psychology during college and I started making brigadeiros for my friends/family and never stopped. For years, I worked in HR but when I moved here, I decided to become a stay at home mom which has been great but more recently decided to make and sell brigadeiros!

What inspired you to start your business?
Other moms. I was so overwhelmed after my second son was born but, the stories of other moms made me see that I could do it too. I made choices, changed priorities, asked for help, started slow and now I’m happy I did it!

What are your favorite things to make in the kitchen with your kids?
We make muffins together every week. But my kids love when I let them roll the brigadeiros for a family treat night. It’s messy!!!

How do you juggle work and mommyhood?
I’m grateful to have a supportive husband, great schools where my kids are very happy and also the possibility to make my own hours. But sometimes (mostly Fridays) I have to work until late at night. And it’s ok. When both kids are at home I do my best to enjoy the time with them. We love to make crafts, ride bikes and go to playgrounds with friends.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve gotten from another mom?
“It’s ok if you don’t do everything, choose your priorities”
