Meet A Mom: Amanda - Stamford Moms

How many kids do you have and what are their ages?
I have 3 children. Elayna 10 and 6 year old twins, Rory and Lexi. They all attend Northeast Elementary in Stamford.

How long have you lived in Stamford? What made you decide to live here?
I have lived in Stamford since 2007. In 2003 my husband was transferred from London to New York for 3 years. 3 years became 4, 15 years later we are still here! We lived in a Manhattan apartment for over 4 years and loved every minute. However, we wanted to get out of renting and apartment living so Stamford was a good option for us. Stamford provides all the amenities of a city and is commutable for my husband going in to Manhattan.

What’s your favorite family activity in Stamford?
My kids love to swim so summertime at the Italian Center outdoor pools is a favorite spot for us. It’s really convenient and we have lots of friends there.

Where’s your favorite place eat in Stamford?
Food shopping is done at Trader Joes and Cobs. We all love to eat out. Some of my favorites are Barcelona, Table 104, Amore, Capital Grill and Coalhouse.

What are your must haves to bring along for the kids when you leave the house?
My kids are at an age now that they don’t really need much when we are on the go. If we are taking a longer journey be it in the car or on a plane then iPads (and headphones) are an essential.

What’s been your favorite “mommy moment” so far?
There have been many moments so it would be hard to pick one. I love to see my kids doing things they enjoy. It’s great to see them in dance recitals, swim meets, on the soccer field and golf course and I love to see them in school productions. My eldest is gearing up for the 5th grade musical at Northeast at the end of March. I’m sure it will quite an emotional event for me!

What’s your favorite thing to do when you need some “me time”?
I love to workout as much for physical fitness as well as mental fitness. I am a fully fledged Peloton addict and happy to admit it. The bike that goes nowhere really was a savior for me when my twins were only in pre school part time. Now that they are all at school I hop on the bike most days. Being Scottish means that golf is pretty much in my blood, you can find me at Sterling Farms once a week once the Spring arrives.

Tell us about your career.
I graduated from Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland with a BSC in Consumer Product Management in 1996 and then a Post Graduate Diploma in Personnel Management in 1998. My first job out of University was working for RBS in London as a Product Manager. I left London in 2003 and headed to NYC with my husband who at the time also worked for RBS. I didn’t have a work permit until we had been in the US for almost a year. When I was finally allowed to work I did various temping jobs in Manhattan, not an experience I ever want to repeat! When we moved to CT I worked as a pre school teaching assistant in New Canaan for a year before leaving to have my first child. Last year, I founded Moonlight Sleepovers!

What made you decide to start Moonlight Sleepovers?
I’ve always had aspirations to work for myself I just never really new what I would do. I had toyed with the idea of going back to work but had no desire to work in an office environment or to pay excessive childcare costs. My family are all in the UK and my husband travels a lot so I really need to be close to home. There are very few jobs that could provide me with the flexibility I needed. I happened to see a link to a similar business on a friend in Scotlands’ Facebook page. I was intrigued by it, researched it and couldn’t find anything else like it in the area. I thought it would be a great fit not just for this area but also a great fit for my life style.

Tell us about Moonlight Sleepovers.
Moonlight Sleepovers elevates the traditional sleepover to an unforgettable experience for kids. I bring individual tents to your home for each guest. In addition to a tent, each guest has a mattress, sheet, blanket and tray table. I set everything up and accessorize it with pillows, lights, bunting and rugs all of which tie in with the theme the customer has chosen from our selection. It is a great way to make a sleepover very special for a birthday or other celebration! You can see some of my creations here!

How do you balance career & mommyhood?
I was lucky enough to be able choose to be a stay-at-home mom, it’s important to me to be around for the kids when they are home. I like to help at some school events, be involved in the PTO and participate in activities. Working from home for myself gives me the flexibility and independence that I craved as well as the satisfaction of building my own business on my own terms.
