Help Your Kids Prepare For The Upcoming School Year and Fall Sports Season With Coastal Orthopedics | Stamford Moms

Can you believe summer is coming to an end? With your children going back to school and the fall sports season beginning, there is a lot that you can do to help them be prepared. Watching your children succeed in school and on the field playing their favorite sport, as they smile with their best friends is truly one of the most joyous feelings.

It’s time for your children to start training and conditioning in the pre-season so they can make it to the postseason without injuries. By sticking to a routine with a combination of strength, balance, endurance, agility, and plyometric training, your children are more likely to stay injury-free because 50% of injuries to younger athletes can be avoided with proper training according to the Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

Many of our board-certified specialists are also team physicians for various High School Sports programs throughout Fairfield County. So if your child is injured on or off the field, schedule an appointment with one of our Sports Medicine Specialists for a proper diagnosis, treatment, and recovery plan.

Sports and Scoliosis

From soccer and lacrosse to cross-country, field hockey, and football, your children have many opportunities to get active this school year. Especially when participating in high-intensity contact sports, it’s important to get your child screened for conditions that are not always easy to spot for the untrained eye, such as scoliosis.

Scoliosis most often develops in children, just before they reach puberty. This condition is an abnormal curvature of the spine that can cause uneven shoulders/waists, muscle spasms, trouble walking, etc. Various approaches such as exercise, medical observation, physical therapy, and chiropractic are used to help manage this condition. For the proper treatment plan, please make an appointment with one of your Spine Center Specialists.

  • Do any professional athletes have scoliosis? Olympic Gold Medalist, Usain Bolt, has scoliosis. Despite having this condition, He is the world record and Olympic record holder in the 100 meters, the 200 meters, and the 4×100 meters relay.
  • Can scoliosis be prevented? Although scoliosis cannot be prevented, we are able to limit the progression of the curve with appropriate bracing and therapy. This can limit deformity, disability, and the need for more aggressive treatment such as surgery.  Therefore, it is important to be checked by one of our spine specialists to diagnose, manage, and monitor your condition.
  • Where can my child be tested for scoliosis? Visit the Spine Center at Coastal Orthopedics today to have your child checked for scoliosis for the best back-to-school year start!
