Strengthening Our Roots
Stamford’s Fairgate Farm opened in 2011 with a mission to grow nutritious produce to fight food insecurity and build a healthier, more equitable local food system throughout the city. The Farm has grown tremendously over the last 15 years and today is a thriving, volunteer-powered urban farm, with its roots in the West Side neighborhood, but now branching out to serve more Stamford communities.
On Thursday, June 25 from 5 to 7 pm, the Farm is holding a special evening event – Strengthening Our Roots – to celebrate the positive impact it has had in the community and welcome newcomers to experience all the Farm has to offer in a fun way. Guests can enjoy homemade pizza and drinks as they stroll through garden paths and cultivate connections in support of the Farm’s unique and meaningful mission. For more information and to RSVP for this free event, visit the registration page.
“The Farm is a hub of connection — to our food system, to nature and to each other,” said Farm Manager Pete Novajosky. “Each year we harvest thousands of pounds and hundreds of varieties of fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers. All of this goes directly back into the community to nourish and be enjoyed by all who want it, regardless of what they can afford. We’re breaking down many of the barriers to fresh food access, but we need the support of the whole community to continue this work as the need is greater than ever.”
Fairgate Farm is part of the Vita Health & Wellness District, a collaboration between the city’s housing authority, Charter Oak Communities, Stamford Hospital and other community organizations. Its Farmstand, open from May to October, provides patrons with the opportunity to pay what they can to purchase fresh produce at reduced prices. In addition to the Farmstand, the Fairgate Community Fridge is a free fridge, food pantry and library located along the Farm’s fence in front of the Farmstand and near the bus stop on Stillwater Avenue. The fridge is part of the Food Rescue US Fridge the Gap program, receiving weekly donations through Food Rescue. With 24/7 street access, community members can also donate and take items as needed.
There are many different ways to connect with the Farm throughout the year. Volunteers are always welcome. Visitors can enjoy cooking demos, gardening workshops, annual festivals and more. The Farm also hosts special events for corporate groups, schools and civic organizations.
Fairgate Farm is located at 129 Stillwater Avenue in Stamford’s West Side neighborhood. For more information, visitwww.fairgatefarm.com.
