Barbara Gersh provides Private Tutoring at Home for Students K-5

After retiring from teaching after forty two years, I found myself missing the children so much that I decided to reach out to students in grades k-5 to renew my passion. I began my career in NYC teaching exceptionally talented and gifted students in grades K- 5. After thirty years I decided to retire to pursue my other passions. Within two months, I was offered a position at Old Greenwich Elementary School teaching fourth grade. I never expected to stay for twelve years but enjoyed the children and community so much, I couldn’t leave. After retiring, I decided to reach out to the community to help students achieve their goals and began individual tutoring. During the pandemic,I worked virtually with a few students and provided them with a full year of appropriate lessons to keep them on grade level. Many of them returned to school the following year significantly ahead of their classmates. I continue to tutor young children in grades K-4 to this day. They bring me joy and very often we become life long friends. I will also provide you with references from local greenwich parents and my previous supervisors, who still work in the Greenwich schools. Dana Gubitosa is a certified Birth- Grade 5 and TESOL (K-12) educator and has 12 years of teaching experience, most recently with Greenwich Public Schools. She has a BA in Psychology from The College of the Holy Cross and a Masters in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from Manhattanville College, as well as her TESOL certification to teach English to Speakers of Other Languages. Her focus is in literacy and language building for both early learners and non-native speakers, as well as, mathematical literacy and common core skills. As a former Kindergarten teacher, she has worked with many preschool students to build Kindergarten readiness in fun and engaging ways! She is trained in Orton Gillingham, FUNdations, and Words Their Way, as well as, Teachers College Reading and Writing Workshop. Dana identifies learning strengths and goals to determine how students learn best and what their next step is in their journey. She uses multimodal, hands-on materials to engage students in language learning and to build lifelong skills transferable to new learning situations. Dana offers 30 minute or 60 minute sessions depending on students’ age and learning target.

Deirdre McEvoy currently teaches reading at public middle school in Manhattan. She has 21 years of full time teaching experience. She has tutored children of various ages; from helping children with private kindergarten admissions to all elementary subjects including reading, writing, math and science. In addition, she helps with organizational skills, study skills and enrichment.

Deirdre attended undergrad at The College of the Holy Cross, majoring in English and PreMed. She loved being able to study both Literature and Science in depth. These experiences instilled a love for learning and a love for teaching. She received her Masters in Teaching from Simmons College.

Recently she completed a Masters Degree in Literacy from Pace University. She has worked with struggling readers and emergent readers and has developed many skills for teaching reading effectively. She has attended training sessions for Orton-Gillingham and Sound and Sensibility.

Finally, Deirdre has 7 nieces and nephews between the ages of three and nine years. Her nieces currently live in New Canaan. She is very close with them and is with them often. Deirdre truly loves children and it is her passion to teach them.

My Tutor and Me was founded in 2002 by a teacher in the Darien school system and her husband. Since then, the company has helped thousands of students in lower Fairfield County improve classroom grades and standardized test scores.
